Though I have enjoyed every couple I’ve met this year and even cried at a few of their weddings, nothing can beat being able to photograph the wedding of a dear cousin. I grew up with this boy, and it was only a little over a year ago that he was giddy showing me Facebook photos of his new girlfriend. I was honored when they asked me to photograph their tiny backyard wedding with only immediate family in attendance. Kimberly and Jon wanted to keep it very simple and down to earth – they blocked off the street of Kimberly’s parent’s house, strung bunting and set out chairs in the back yard. Kimberly got dressed in her pink sponge-painted girlhood room, and I stood close enough Jon to hear his quiet gasp when he saw her come around the corner of the house on her dad’s arm. It was the most beautiful thing. The rest of the evening was filled with croquet, several hours in a nearby historic town for wedding party photos, and a delicious dinner on the lawn followed by dancing under strings of lights. It was a fun change for me to be part guest and part photographer, and so wonderful to be so invested in this couple’s life, an investment that started twenty five years ago and will continue the rest of our lives. Congratulations to my cuz and his beautiful girl.

I could, of course, go on and on about how sweet this set is, but since I’m making myself narrow my gushing down to three favorites I’d have to say I utterly adore the mascara in the mirror picture (so striking: poised with anticipation of the day), the just married sign on the bicycle built for two (which makes the old song run through my head), and the bridal party in the barn, and the chuckling at the toast and the first dance under the lights… what can I say? I shouldn’t have limited myself.
