Jillian and Brian’s wedding was supposed to take place outside, under the fall leaves on what should have been a pretty warm day. The day arrived, and the snow would not stop. That is despair on Jillian’s face in the second photo as she looks out the window. But from my perspective, and I think many of the guests and finally Jillian and Brian themselves, it was the absolute perfect weather. The summer camp with a rustic lodge was so cozy as the fires blared inside and the snow kept piling up. Jillian did an amazing job with DIY decorations – homemade jam as favors, logs from Brian’s mother’s backyard hollowed out for baby’s breath and attached to chairs, and personalized beer steins for all the groomsmen. Their friends knew how to party with food fights, keg stands and s’mores into the night. This wedding was featured on 100 Layer Cake, you can hear Jillian’s own description of the wedding over there.

I was so excited to shoot Amanda and Brett’s wedding from the moment I met them, they are such a fun down to earth couple. Their wedding was tiny, exactly the way they wanted it, just their very best friends and family hanging out all evening, eating fajitas and dancing. Amanda is an interior designer with a great sense of style and a DIY streak, and Brett is a landscape architect and self dubbed ‘tree nerd’ so we made sure to incorporate leaves everywhere we could in the photos. This wedding was featured on Junebug – make sure to check out more photos including the self-portrait invitations Amanda designed over there. Their adorable surprise first look photo and story was also featured on Moment Junkie here.

The bride wore a birdcage veil and Louboutins as Wilco and Feist wafted through the air, and a perfect party got down. Christine and Steve wanted to do this whole wedding thing a little differently. They planned a mutual proposal last year, and then actually eloped at the DC courthouse on their 4 year dating anniversary in May. Then, once the pressure was off, because they were already married, they had an amazing party with their friends and family at the Lodge at Little Seneca Creek – a summer camp! I think I especially loved their party because the music, the log cabin lodge, and the atmosphere reminded me a lot of my own wedding. Christine and Steve wrote their own vows and they were some of the most creative and adorable vows I’ve ever heard – Christine promised to let Steve take the lead but if he ever doesn’t want to she’ll be happy to step in!  These two have style, personality and a lot of love and it shone through every beautiful detail of their day.

Though I have enjoyed every couple I’ve met this year and even cried at a few of their weddings, nothing can beat being able to photograph the wedding of a dear cousin. I grew up with this boy, and it was only a little over a year ago that he was giddy showing me Facebook photos of his new girlfriend. I was honored when they asked me to photograph their tiny backyard wedding with only immediate family in attendance. Kimberly and Jon wanted to keep it very simple and down to earth – they blocked off the street of Kimberly’s parent’s house, strung bunting and set out chairs in the back yard. Kimberly got dressed in her pink sponge-painted girlhood room, and I stood close enough Jon to hear his quiet gasp when he saw her come around the corner of the house on her dad’s arm. It was the most beautiful thing. The rest of the evening was filled with croquet, several hours in a nearby historic town for wedding party photos, and a delicious dinner on the lawn followed by dancing under strings of lights. It was a fun change for me to be part guest and part photographer, and so wonderful to be so invested in this couple’s life, an investment that started twenty five years ago and will continue the rest of our lives. Congratulations to my cuz and his beautiful girl.
